John Deere 4210 - Not Moving

Been a member for years, but I think this is my first post.

I have a JD 4210 with hydrostatic transmission. The tractor will sporadically move forward & reverse, or not.... The light has been flashing for years with a short-long-long-long code, but no sensor has been replaced, simply because I can use the tractor for hours one day, but the next day it decides not to move.

Last fall, I drained the hydraulic fluid and cleaned our the internal screen, which was slimy & somewhat plugged up. I didn't think about it in advance to purchase one, but did not replace the thread-on filter. The tractor continued to work with no problems throughout the winter. Never missed a beat...

I've been out of town for six months and go to use the tractor again this past week. Tractor worked for about two hours, then randomly stopped in it's tracks on Tuesday. I fire it up yesterday, and it ran for thirty minutes without a hitch, then stopped. I let it sit for twenty minutes, then fired it up, and it worked well for another thirty minutes till I finished the project.

I looked at the view-port for the fluid level and it is full, and there is no fluid on the floor when the tractor was parked for the past six months. However, the fluid does look a bit cloudy, which is what I recall it looking like last fall, even though the fluid was fresh.

I considered draining the fluid, cleaning the internal screen again and buying a thread on filter, but figured I'd ask others before doing so. Any suggestions that others may recommend are appreciated.

Thank you, and my email address is below if direct contact is easier.

I have not replaced the external filter since owning the tractor for the past 3-4 years.

I talked to a heavy-equipment diesel mechanic friend of mine yesterday and explained the scenario to him. He recommended draining the fluid, cleaning the internal screen and replacing the external filter.

Last year when I drained the system and cleaned the internal screen, there appeared to be a good amount of gunk on it. My friend suggested this may be algae, and that JD may have an additive they suggest be added to the system after draining & refilling.

Unless I get some other recommendations, I'll be going to JD late today and getting some hy-guard, a new filter and an additive for the algae unless they suggest otherwise. I probably should have done this all last year, but the tractor was running fine all through the fall/winter, so I assumed (I know....) all was well.

Any additional input is appreciated.

Thanks
