Hello,
I just acquired 1986 Ford 1310, rebuilt engine, glow plugs, new injectors and rebuilt injector pump.
These are my steps to start.
Connect to heavy duty battery charger with switch to boost position.
Turn key to glow plug for 60 seconds
Crank starter for numerous minutes until it starts. Did I say numerous minutes as I watch the black puffs of smoke from the exhaust pipe.
Does not like starter fluid, and does not matter the throttle position
Runs great after I start it.
No matter how long I use it, I have to follow the starting procedure described, so I leave it idling until I'm done.
That's it, in a nutshell.
Any thoughts and advice is appreciated.

For openers, a "fresh rebuild" always raises questions. It's a common fact that replacement (engine) parts are always suspect. On both the quality and consistency side and the fits and tolerances side. Nearly EVERY part, pistons rings, bearings, even gaskets, must be scrutinized before and during assembly or the end result can be problematic. What all was done in this case regarding cylinder walls, cylinder head, valves, guides, fits and tolerances of same, ETC. Any or all of that stuff can and will affect starting.

That said, the black smoke is of concern here. Most properly running diesel engines will smoke when cranking, but the color is usually lighter in color. Grey, towards white rather than black. I associate black smoke with a running engine, not one that's cranking, trying to start. Your symptoms lead me towards a possible timing problem or a compression issue.

Just curious, have you tried pull starting it? Sometimes that can tell you something. Getting it to turn over faster than the starter can crank it will overcome a low compression problem.

All great points..
Does your engine shut off with the key or by moving the throttle.?
If it’s with the key, I would remove the shut off solenoid and then go thru your starting procedure..

I would take a test lite to the glow plug rail to MAKE SURE that it’s getting voltage..
& if yes, test a couple of the glow plugs.. I’ve never heard of one waiting for 60 seconds.. but if that’s what your manual says..??
I’ve always used 2 sets of 10 seconds.. or a 1, 1000, 2-1000, 3-1000.. to 10.

good luck.
