A survey conducted in 2003 by the Nation Retail Federation found that the average man planned to spend almost $126 on Valentine's Day, while the average woman planned to spend only $38. According to the survey, more than 80% of Americans planned to give their spouse or significant other a greeting card to mark the occasion, and more than half of the couples had planned an evening out. Among other gift categories, 65% of men planned to send flowers, 32% were giving candy and 21% were buying jewelry.
Age also plays a role in the largesse of the celebration. The average 18 to 34 year-old planned to spend $140. Americans age 35 to 54 planned to spend $60, while consumers age 55+ planned to spend just less than $50.
