Transmission fluid, alternative to J20D

Hi guys,

Anybody know if I can use tranmission oil from supercheap auto for my john deere, please? It recommends J20D. I need it tomorrow so Super cheap auto is my only option. They have Penrite Automatic Transmission fluid FS4. Will it do? What do you guys use? Besides, I read that J20D is for cold weather and J20C for hot. I'm near Brisbane and it's getting hot!

Thanks in advance
With the Yanmar compacts using J20C for warm temps and cold temps needing the J20D, we known people in the EU have used Mopar ATF+4 as a substitute.

I would not recommend any such substitution. There is a considerable difference in "tractor transmission hydraulic " fluid and automotive ATF.
The JD J20D is a high quality para-synthetic fluid. Any quality para-synthetic tractor transmission hydraulic fluid will be a good choice, either Deere or CIH, NH or quality after maket.
CNH and NH are not matches for J20C. ATF+4 is a good match. It's full synthetic and works very well with manual transmissions, transfer cases and power steering units.
ATF+4 also the chosen to match Mitsubishi applications where an MS-9602 type fluid is specified. The same fluid type in many Mitsubishi tractors in Japan. J20C is really the Yanmar TF500A. This all goes back the Japan tractors and automotive vehicles from the 70s and 80s.

I would have to see a good technical article comparing "Hytrans" to ATF or "ATF+4" and in many years of tractors I've never seen such an article.
You would never see the article as a person in the general public. Only technical engineers who have access to Ashland-Valvoline internal data.

The OP mentions, "...and J20C for hot. I'm near Brisbane and it's getting hot! " So, he's looking for J20C or something to work much like it.

J20C and CAT TO-2, both are 10w based oils.

To confirm which fluid is suitable for your gearbox, it is highly recommended to go through the user’s manual. However, you can also check out the Valvoline transmission fluid compatibility chart to ensure suitable vehicles and models.
