Stick welder not striking an ark

226 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  HydroTek
Hello, I’m brand new to welding and I bought a Lincoln Tombstone 225 ac welder. It worked great last week and today when I turned it on it stopped buzzing and it when I try to strike a ark at any amps only sparks. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the nuts holding the leads to the machine, these will sometimes work loose, if the nuts are tight and the welder is new, then time to take back to seller for warranty claim, also check where the cables connect to the welding hand piece and the earth clamp, if all mentioned are ok, then it will be internal and as mentioned, if covered with warranty, that will be the way to go.

I am assuming that when you say Lincoln Tombstone 225 you are talking about the old "buzz box" style Lincoln and not a brand new 225 amp Lincoln, correct? You bought a used one, correct? Are you only trying it on AC or have you tried AC and both DC modes? Also, what amp setting were you welding on? Most of the old Lincolns don't like more then a 20% duty cycle on the higher amp settings......Can burn them up internally....

Yes it’s a buzzer box I bought used. I was running it at 90 amps. I will pull it the cover and see if there’s any wire disconnect or anything dirty.
Sure your breaker has not tripped ?
they can trip on one leg, and not move the lever
try working the breaker and see if the power is restored

Does the switch on the welder have a good snap when it is moved ?

Should run 90 amps all day without problem
