I'm the only pea picker in this county shipping peas to California. Heck, I'm probably the only one east of the Mississippi doing it. Well, maybe it isn't quite as big of a deal as it sounds. Eighteen pints is all we’ll be shipping this year. I have a son who lives in L.A. We send him some peas each year just to give him a little taste of home. He loves Zipper peas.
We freeze most of the vegetables for our use. So far, we have frozen 25 quarts of Zipper peas (got 2 sons-in-law that like them also), 7 quarts of black-eye peas, and 6 quarts of butter beans. Okra, squash, snap beans, corn, and cucumbers, I don’t think we kept track of the amounts. My wife has canned 13 quarts of tomatoes, which is a little disappointing due to a blight that killed most of our tomato plants.
In addition we’ve shared some of most everything with the family and neighbors. Probably have already cut and gave away over 150 lbs of okra. Okra usually makes until frost kills it, so the “give away” total could triple before year’s end.
