I'll help get it started and the gear heads will give it depth No Doubt!!

A gearing ratio that reduces the power output required to maintain end speed /torque in a specific range by lowering the gear ratio.

As defined by the Meriam Webster dictionary: an automotive transmission gear that transmits to the drive shaft a speed greater than engine speed.

Basically used in automotive applications to lower engine RPM while maintaining higher speeds, thus allowing for fuel economy.

Well I practal use, it allows many things. In a truck or 4x4 it allows lower gears in the dif's, that gives you eather better towing power from a stop, or a slower crawl off road, and at the same time allows the engine to trun at lower RPM on the road, when you need the fuel MPG.
