Mitsubishi MT210 steering box problem

249 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  FredM
Have the little above named tractor as my Ford 3000 diesel is going on year four of not running....
Was mowing my small pasture this afternoon and the steering suddenly got a notchy feeling. Well I go to turn at the end of the row and the steering wheel turned but the wheels did not!!
Used the brakes to steer it back to the house.
Problem is in the gearbox. I turn the steering wheel to the right and the gearing meshed I assume and the wheels turned to the right.
I turn the steering wheel to the left and wheels don't turn and the whole steering shaft starts to rise as I'm turning. Back to the right and the shaft drops down.
Is there a clip or some kind of keeper in the steering box abyss??
Anybody happen to have an image or link to an exploded parts diagram or some-such?
Better yet, any first hand experience?
I am truly a tractor killer.... ☠

See this thread now,
Thank you once again bmaverick!
Based on the image on page 141 I can't see a real clear cut reason why the whole steering shaft would be lifting out. But I do think this is more serious than I originally thought....
I think you will find it will be something that holds the top bearing, maybe the bearing recess has collapsed at the base of the steering column, looking at the parts diagram, the top and bottom bearings locate worm and ball box and if the steering shaft is rising up the column, then this points to the top bearing, not sure if you have a standard box or power steer.
"Addendum"
If your steering box is a Power steering box, then it would be possible that snap ring #25 in the parts drawing has broken or has come out of its recess.

Looking at the parts breakdown, you may be lucky enough to just remove the steering wheel and the upper steering column to check this, the top bearing would hold the ball box steering shaft in place and if the circlip is not doing its job, this will allow the bearing and shaft to rise out of the steering box housing.

Well Hells Bells!! Looks like upper and lower bearing destroyed!! 20 ball bearings in bottom of steering box. I'm guessing 10 from upper, 10 from lower. Body of bearings still in steering box. So I will at the very least need two bearings. Page 141 item 10 of above pdf I believe. Not sure how to do this job, but we'll see....

I just ordered this. We'll see how it goes. Anybody done this repair before?

I haven't, but there are a few lads here that have done it. Be ware of the timing of the gears is what I have heard, Otherwise you may end up turned too far one way and not enough the other. Of course I have a hard time remembering what I had for supper yesterday!?!

JimmyL when you re-assemble the ball box, use some grease, Vaseline is ok to hold the balls in place, are you replacing the seals on the pitman shaft?, this will need to be removed before you will be able to re-assemble the box.

The two old bearing cases can be removed easily by running a light gauge weld around on the inside of the ball run, this will shrink the housing and makes for easier removal.

When assembling the ball nut to the pitman gear, make sure both are centered and temporarily attach the outside plate and give the steering shaft a few full turns either way checking if the pitman arm is centered before loading with oil and finishing off.
