I purchased this Maytag single cylinder hit and miss engine at the tractor show yesterday. It is a 1935 model. It does run quite well. I am going to disassemble it and clean it up nice.

They are a neat little motor. You have to really tie them to the ground or they will walk away. I also used to have the Maytag twin. that is a smooth little engine.

I have looked at the twins and plan on having one but love the sound of hit & miss engines. Wish I could afford a bigger hit & miss.

Here are some pics of the progress. So far I have found one cracked piece but have a replacement on the way. It is cleaning up quite nice and easy.

The motor did run before disassembly. It ran rather well. I don't know what I will do with the motor once it is done, it'll probably sit on a shelf.

I got parts from Bob's Small Engine Parts . Seems like a real nice guy.

You can take it to engine and tractor shows. I used to take my engines to them. It was great just listening to them run all day.

Here is a picture of the piston and rod out of a 3 HP Fairbanks Morse kerosene burner. That is a lot of piston for a 3 HP engine.
it weighed about 400 pounds. That is the green engine on my trailer.

Nice setup. I hope to one day have a nice size hit & miss coupled to an ice cream churn, those are great.

I am sure I will hit a couple of the shows eventually, once I have a few more engines.
