For the last 20 years I have been dealing with a ongoing problem with left ear after I ruptured my left eardrum when I was on flying status in the Air Force. The doctor after reviewing the CT scan and reviewing my history finally decided that the tube from sinus to inner ear was not going to heal and medications were not going to help anymore decided to place a small tube in the ear. Man what a difference. It still tingles a little but I am picking up every noise in stereo again and to hear a bird signing as a normal person again is just wonderful. The doctor wants me back in 2 weeks for a follow up but It's great to be able to hear everything again. I was advised not to use the foam ear plugs but to use muffs from now on as the tube is in the eardrum. The best part for me is not to feel dizzy all the time and the headaches I have been having is totally gone. Take god for this wonderful doctor to listen to what I had to say and act upon it.

Michael, very glad to hear all went well with the surgery and you experienced such a tremendous improvement. I have missed a valsava or two during my 20 years on flight status and depending upon the altitude; was very painful. Sounds to me like the doc inserted the tube in your ustation tubes to allow your ear and ear drum to be able to vent to atmospheric pressure. I can imagine how difficult living with this problem must have been for you. Take care and enjoy the new found hearing! :D ;)

Michael…

Glad to learn about your successful surgery.
Sorry you had the problem to begin with and had to live
with it for so long. But that’s behind you now, so enjoy
your re-found hearing and don’t forget to protect it.

I sure enjoy hearing again but now I cannot have selective hearing what the wife says. She already said something under her breath and I heard everything she said in tagalog and I immediately responded in tagalog back to her, I wasn't suppose to hear what she said but I picked up as she was on my left side. Recently it had been really bad with the dizzy spells and the constant pressure against the ear but now the pressure is normal in the ear and it is responding correctly.

Well I have always used foam plugs but those are out and I will have to use the set of Pelter ear protectors that I already have for the chainsaw. I woke up this morning and did not have the normal dizziness that I always wake up to. The equalized pressure between both ears is great and comfortable as well, I have to use a ear drops for couple weeks. but the whole thing is great and to hear correctly is GREAT!!!!!!!:D

Hope it continues to workout for you Michael. I lived on prescription meclazine for nearly a year once. In my case they never did find what caused the dizziness. Thankfully the symptoms subsided on their own.

The bad part of the steriods that I had to spray in my nose every morning to dry out my sinuses, The problem was I using it so much I started to gain to much weight. Being 6'6" tall and I had ballooned to almost 400 pounds and I went a strict diet and stopped using the steriod nose spray 11 months ago and got my weight back down to 295 pounds when I weighed myself last week on my scale. I decided that I could live with the minor problems of not using the nose spray and just using the Alegra every night but I still had the dizziness every morning. AT my annual physcial last month I mentioned the problems and the headaches I had all the time when My primary care doctor refered me to a specialist (ear nose throat) he took one look and ordered audiogram and CT scan and yesterday he had all the results and recommended the tube.
Now for the reason I put this thread in the safety forum, If you ever fly make sure your ears equalize if you land and have to take off again. The damage to my left is permanent and I will have to have some sort of tube in the ear the rest of my life. Thank goodness that there is something that can be done for people like me.
The second part is I always wear hearing protection because I work in a exteme noise environment at Boeing and when I tested by the specialist the audiogram was normal.

Well now that I have had the tube for a week and my hearing has been improved, I have had to learn to ignore buzzs and such because my brain did not process them because I could not hear that well before out of the left ear. It took about 3 days to learn to ignore or should I say my brain to ignore them.
The doctor was completely right about using earmuffs in place of the foam hearing protection. I tryed some foam plugs per the instructions of the doctor to see if I could wear them, NO WAY, They hurt to much after a minute and back to the earmuffs to protect my refound hearing. I also found out if the wife wants to vaccuum the house to either put the muffs on or go outdoors to get away from it. The noise from that machine is just to much for me to handle without protection. I think its the high pitch it puts out just bugs the daylights out me.

Oh yea, :D I am hanging in there. :spinsmile This is great in the fact I am picking up so many sounds in stereo again. To hear everything as it should is just great. The best part is not waking up dizzy and with a headache and even putting up with the ear drops twice a day is nothing compared to what I had before. My hearing is so good I can even tell when the neighbors drives by just from the sound of his engine or someone else.

Just back from the Doctors office this morning

Well yesterday and today I had follow on appointments for my left ear. Another set of CT scans and a audiogram on my hearing and another visit with the doctor.

The results and the look the doctor had was almost all positive. My hearing in my left ear has improve by over 20% and the ear looks normal and everything is great except for the tube from the sinus to inner ear. It has permanant scarring and probably never heal to allow me not to have some sort of tube in the ear drum. He also stated the ear drum is in better shape then what it look like when he did the operation 3 months ago. Looks like a tube in the eardrum will likely be a permanent fixture in the left ear. The current tube likely will be replaced in January with a permanent one as this one is a temp.

I do not mind the tube at all. In fact I have become so use to it that I do not know why I did not push to see the specialist years ago.
The best part is having the hearing restored and not being constantly dizzy from not having equal pressure between the ears. Even if the tube I have now is a temp. I will allow the doc to operate to install a more permanent tube in Jan.:D :D :D :D

Oh yea, Last weekend my wife and I took a wonderful trip over the mountains to dry part of Washington state and went over the North Cascades Highway and went over the pass to some friends on the East side of the mountains. No problems with the ear at all and it was not even painful for me. GREAT NO PAIN ON GOING THE PASS OR DOWN. Cruising is now fun again and I can go elevation changes with no problemscruisin
