Husqy yth2148 turns no start

Started up fine. Drove up a small hill of loose gravel got stuck a little and it died with a little puff of white smoke on the right side of the hood. Blades were not on and deck was raised all the way up. It is getting gas passed the pump and getting sparks on both plugs. Air filter looks good. Any ideas where to go from here. Thanks

Obviously not an electric motor, but beyond that, the options are many. Engine OEM and model would be good to know ....... "White Puff" is kind of an ominous scenario

Great engine.... White puff of smoke and "No start" not so good. Run a compression test to check for a blown head gasket, or a valve gone bad (a Leak down Test would tell you more). Pull the rocker covers and see if a pushrod came out of a rocker because the valves were way out of adjustment. How many hours on that nearly 20 year old Briggs? Exact replacement engine is $800 + Shipping. O/H parts and machining is about $600 if it's a worse case scenario.

440 hrs on engine. Did compression test. No compression on the left side. 90 psi on the right side. It does start it just runs real rough with white puffs coming from air filter area
440 hours on a Vanguard Engine is usually not rings, that's a 1,500 hour + engine. Pull the left rocker cover and check the pushrods at TDC. If it's dropped a valve seat, one valve will some times be sitting lower than the other. Push on the valve spring caps with a stout screwdriver, they should both pop back to the same height(they both should be completley closed at TDC compression stroke). On a Briggs, steel pushrod is usually exhaust, aluminum pushrod is usually Intake

Once again, a leak-down test tells you way more than a compression test. Compression test tells you there's a problem, leak-down test pin points it. You blow compressor air into the cylinder with it "locked" at TDC (both valves closed). Air coming out the exhaust -- Exhaust valve. Air coming out of the carb -- Intake valve. Air in the crankcase (listening through the dipstick tube) --- Rings

Check out your local Autozone.... They probably have a leak-down tester as part of their Loaner Tool Program

Pulled head off. Piston is not moving when turning over by hand.

Sorry to say, but if that piston is not moving, it is the worst case scenario and it broke a rod.

Replace the mower, or replace the engine?
Hey i wanna thank you for all your help i really do appreciate it.

Rebuild on that engine is going to cost $500-$600..... Are looking for a used engine, a new replacement, or are you just going to look for another mower?

Rebuild on that engine will probably run $500-$600..... Here's a new replacement for $565 with FREE shipping. Comes with a 2 year warranty from Briggs. It's a 20Hp, but that's with the new HP rating system. You won't even notice the 2 Hp difference from that Vanguard

Briggs Intek $565
This mower was given to me by a neighbor. So i think it might be worth it to get that motor you suggested. You cant beat $565 for a mower that might last another 20 years. Once again thank you.

That 20 year old mower is as good as anything you'll find at Lowes, or HD, for $1,200.... You just need to make sure of your crankshaft size. Should be 1" diameter x 3-5/32" length. The mounting bolt holes will match up, the muffler should match up, and if the engine plug doesn't match the mower plug, I can help you with that. That's a really good deal on that engine. If your mower is still solid, that's the way I would go.
Sounds good to me. Not a speck of rust on this mower. I will keep you posted.
