I have a EX-CELL 1500psi pressure washer that i dug out of the trash last year. It will start on the 2nd or 3rd pull but it floods out bad black smoke and all it hunts or surges how ever you say it. The plug is black with shoot and i guess this is why they threw it out. I took a carb of another engine it runs a little better but not much its a plastic carb and no adjustments on it any ideas help.
Its a brigg + strattion 4 hp quattro.
The model# 10a902 type 0240 01 code 97041455
Thanks for any help. Jody

dug out of the trash?

Do you normally dig things out of the trash? :D

Well it seems like your fuel mixture is definately too rich (black smoke) -- you might have additional problems which could be causing this problem. Have you performed a compression test on the engine and tried to determine good cylinder compression? (bad rings?) Dark soot on the plugs is a sign of rich engine mixture or increased combustion gas leakage past the piston rings as well, so no matter how you look at it --- you have that problem.

If the charge of air and fuel cannot be compressed properly, the combustion process will not work like it should. (hunts, surging, etc issues that you just spoke about) Lack of compression might occur for these reasons:
1) Your piston rings are worn (allowing air/fuel to leak past the piston during compression --- like fuel at this point - BLACK SMOKE AND SOOT ON THE PLUGS!)
2) The intake or exhaust valves are not sealing properly, again allowing a leak during compression.
3) There is a hole in the cylinder.
4) etc, etc, etc....

Honestly, it sounds like you have a very worn engine you are dealing with. A simple ring job might do the trick perhaps coupled with some good cleaning/honing and gasket replacements. But then again, you might have just bit off more than it is worth! :D

Good luck!

Hope this helps,
Andy

trash is gold

Andy
Thats where i got my edger it had a stuck exhaust valve i got my tiller just had to clean the tank and put new points and plug and my lawn boy push mower the coil was bad on it. You would be surprise at what people throw out:D thats why i want to know about what might be wrong with the pressure washer. It starts good and works good its just the pressure goes up and down with the motor because its running rich.

Yep..

just kidding with you on the "Trash" thing... That is TOO awesome of you. GOOD FOR YOU. You save money and save one more piece of good equipment end up in a junk pile somewhere.
Let me know if you run across any other "junk" !!! :D

yeah like I already said looks like you either have a seriously bad fuel delivery system (carb etc) or you have a problem with the rings and too much fuel & AIR getting into the cylinder causing fouling of the plugs and overall "bad performance" ---- do a dry and wet compression test on the cylinder and report back!

Do you want some insight on the compression test steps?

jody-- assumiomg that the engine runsa well but surges andthe plug is carb dirty -- you are geting too much gas-- doe sthe choke plate really fully open? and on the second carb- did it run well BEFORE you put it on the nachine? [ suspect fuel/air needle and seat] if ok and the second carb was better than the first ----then I suspect it has a leaky head gasket - not a burnt valve--

One mans TRASH in as another mans GOLDMINE!!! :) :D

But seriously - I would keep the original carb.
Go buy yourself some KREEN from www.kanolabs.com or some other carbon dissolver fluid.

Pour it in the oil and the gas and run it for a few minutes. It can clear out all the "crap" in the lines and the orifices.

Also, you can try some WD-40 or KROIL (see above) that works just great on rusted parts. I was able to remove /by hand/ a fully rusted on bolt when before I tried with a wrench after using KROIL.

Then at least you can ADJUST things on it instead of that junk plastic version. Then you will have yourself a good unit there!!

BTW: I am not advertising nor am I associated with Kano Labs, but their stuff is the BEST on the market that I found - it WORKS!!

I had an 15+ year old Craftsman lawnmower that just stopped workign one day. I poured in some Kreen and the next time I started it just came to dead stop. Hmmm... I took off the head and surprise: a big solid block of carbon deposit jammed between the cylinder head and the piston. I took that out (obviously loosened by the Kreen) and put it together - it is still working for someone to whom I sold it!!!!

I am giving this info becasuse lots of floks just trhow away stuff because they cannot FIX motors or rusted on stuff...with this stuff I am amazed at how well it penetrates and works. Good luck and happy "trashing"

And then there is always Kreme, which is used to clean, seal and coat the insides of pitted leaking rusy fuel tanks. Unless one of ther other workds Kreen was misspelled, dunno, as I have never heard of Kreen personally, then were talking about the same stuff. I have used this stuff quite a few times, and it does work.

Heck as much as I have used this stuff I think I may have it misspelled as well:confused:

Nothing wrong with treasure hunting in the trash! I'm a 3rd generation dumpster diver myself. Furnished my brother's house after he got married by picking up furniture along the road on "clean up" day. Furnished my house later the same way. I've gotten rid of machines that I didn't want to invest the time in by putting them at the end of my driveway with a free sign. It is recycling at it's most basic. No refining or melting or reprocessing, just clean it and use it.:)

Near Me

In Springeville New York ,there is an auction house that has a consignment auction every wednesday.People bring there stuff they want to sell ,and pile it on the ground outside all year round. Each lot is given a number and sold to the highest bidder.People will buy anything.Piles of stuff range from complete junk to hidden treasure.
I take a load of garage cleaning up there myself about twice a year.In the spring I load up about 300 locust fence posts, they ussually bring around $2.00 each. One time I was on my way to the auction and it was big trash day. In a pile for the garbage man was an old oak dresser in rough shape.Well I had room on the truck and already looked like Sanford and Son going down the road. That dang dresser brought $95.50, two ladies bid each other up.I was standing next to the one who won, kept telling her,"thats a nice piece to let get away so cheap".

Update

Well i pulled my EX-CELL 1500psi pressure washer out Friday and put a new plug and change the oil and it ran like a champ no problems at all. Could the plug have cause it to surge like that:question: I use it all day Friday 7 tanks of gas and it ran fine.

Sure will Jody....
Especially if its a Champion plug.........we've had brand new engines with Champions misfire/not run. Put in an NGK......voila!

At the store people will bring in the sorriest maintained piece of equipment, say it won't start/run right........and last comment is "I put a plug in it"......lol. Its like if I could invent a "magic plug" that would cure dirty fuel, clogged air filters and gummed up carbs I'd be rich! Sell those suckers for $50 each !

Sometimes ,like in your case, it does the trick.
