I have a '97 Ford 1220 that the original owner was a bit too hard on using the Back hoe and cracked the axle housing where the mounting bolts attach on one side (see photos). See Images. The axle housings are symmetrical (see parts diagram). This mean I could swap left and right, reassemble and everything could work the way it supposed to, but I risk leaks, replacing the seals, and 2x the work and possibly availability of some parts.

I'd like advice on whether to swap them and how much work is involved or purchasing a used axle housing removing only the cracked one and replacing it.

Really need a sub-frame to support that backhoe

Changing out that housing should not too much of a problem
By subframe do you mean the frame that is built into the 756B backhoe attachment, slides under the tractor, and connect via PINs? Or is there something else? Can you share a link or picture? I have the whole backhoe setup that includes a a frame with 4 point attachment to the 1220

I have a 1210 with same problem with broken casting. Previous owner put too much weight or bouncing on 3 pt hitch, broke away around bolt holes and elongated tapped holes in differential housing. The lower pivot had a bracket, picking up on two of the housing bolts. I made a bracket that picked up on 5 of the bolts to spread out the forces. Not enough material left to heli-coil threads on some bolts, I drilled thru lower holes and thru bolted to seal for oil leaks. I think my fix is stronger than the original set up.
As far as backhoe, I don't think Ford made a 3 pt hitch Backhoe, Therefore your backhoe has the mounting frame.

Do you have any Pics you could share on what you did?

You are right after market manufactures...Would make those? My Kubota has a OEM backhoe with a Kubota model number on it! It was manufactured for Kubota by Woods.

I will attempt to show damage to my 1210 and how and why my repair.
The attached picture should show damage, picture is undamaged lower pivot (upside down)
The 757 backhoe is what Ford sold for the 1210. The sub frame was hung from the lower pivot. Ford supplied a different pivot to attach the backhoe. The pivot's bracket picked up 3 bolts vs 2 on standard (guess they needed more strength).
I designed and made my backhoe (posted earlier) , picture shows sub frame, I did not want to hang hoe from pivot, so I hung it from the axle housings. The close up picture shows the modified lower pivot bracket (which picks up 5 bolts) If it is not clear, I will have to drop backhoe to get better picture (give me a few days).
Don't know about the 1220, but if your sub frame hangs from the the pivot, and pivot is compromised , I would be real careful.
Hope this helps or food for thought
