I just got a new transmission dipstick for my tractor. The handle broke off the old one. The problem is the old one is 6 3/8" long and the new one is just 4 3/4" long.
Can anyone tell me the right length?

Hello Aj, welcome to the forum.

You can buy an Operating & Maintenance Manual for a Ferguson TO20 on the internet, or on ebay for less that $25. As I understand it, your tractor has a common reservoir including transmission and rear end. From the manual you will learn how to drain it (3 drain plugs) and the refill capacity (6-7 gallons). After draining and refilling it properly, you can determine which dipstick is correct.

I would go by the shorter dipstick. It does not hurt anything to overfill a bit. Guys with loaders on their tractors overfill their reservoirs to compensate for loader hydraulic capacity.
