I recently purchased a farm house which included a Craftsman 5500 lawn tractor. The machine sat outdoors(Central Illinois) for two years.
My Son-in-law and I got it running. However, when the engine gets to operating temperature, it misses and then eventually dies. It does run a while at operating temperature, but usually no longer than a half hour.
Replacing the carburetor actually made the problem worse. Leaving the gas cap loose, with the old carb, the engine runs better, and longer, but still eventually goes into stumble mode and then dies.
When it does run, the engine purrs, until the stumble effect begins.
Any suggestions as to what this problem is and how to correct it would be most appreciated. Great machine otherwise.
