Cable compared to DSL

On paper cable is usually is faster than DSL, but the speeds can vary quite a bit depending on how good of infrastructure or plant your cable company has, as well as how many people in your locale are using it at the same time. That is true for DSL too, but to a much lesser degree. And since your on a dedicated line (your local phone line) your DSL broadband connection is not nearly as susceptible to local traffic or use.
I've been on DSL for about 4.5 years and have had hardly any service issues. You might look into your local Telco's DSL offering's too, besides Earthlink.
You might want to ask Cable and DSL users in your area what they use and how well they like it. Here's a good site for Broadband comparisons: dslreports.com

No, not after seeing your numbers!
Ok, heres mine:
Communications 574.5 kilobits per second
Storage 70.1 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 14.6 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad
I subscribe to 768 down and 128 up. 1.5 MB/sec is available for $10 more.

It usually tests a little faster than that. It's consistently 80 to 85% of what I pay for, which is acceptable to me.
I can see the need for those incredible speeds, s_j. That way you can be sure to get your latest virus updates downloaded as soon as possible! :lmao:

Cable. Cox said they'd upgraded the network. We were supposed to get ~4Mbps d/l speeds, but my real d/l speed (when hauling in patches, A-V updates, video/audio, etc.) fluctuates between 90-190Kb/s. I understand there's network traffic to deal with, plus load on the sending server, but I've never actually seen speeds above 200Kb/s for $40/mo. Meh!:dazed:

Heres mine i have DSL lite i used to have the next step up on DSL which was a 1.3 megabits per second and it did it. But the Lite is slower but it still freed up my phone and don't cost me but $22. a month and it beat the $40. i was paying. Its fast enough for me most of the time. The DSL lite is suppose to be 256.kilobits per second and most of the time thats what i get but tonight its a little slower.
