Just to start things off...

I purchased an ATI 9600 a month or so ago. What a nice card. I previously was using NVIDIA and there is such a huge difference from a gaming standpoint. The biggest performance gain is more directly related to the AGP speed and the amount of memory on the card.

NVIDIA AGP 2/4 with 32 meg
ATI 9600 AGP 4/8 with 128 meg

I play alot of Day Of Defeat (DOD) and it performs so much better than other cards I have used. I was comptiplating going to the 9800, but it was a little too steep. I have a buddy who is even doing the over-clocking stuff... not my cup of tea.

I don't get this video card stuff...

My best Computer has an nvidia card in it, but am not sure about memory. It drives my 19" monitor just fine, but don't notice much difference between it and the little Pentium 133 (with VGA monitor) that sits on the other end of the desk. They both have good video quality, so I'm not sure what the deal is about video.

Doing browsing, word processing, spreadsheets, etc... you probably WON'T see a difference. Gaming, depending on the game, yes, you will see a difference. Mine sweeper and Solitaire don't count as "games".

HEHEHE --- funny --- My ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (256MB) is a good solid card...(I still have 2 9700s which are still fabulous) I run a dual P4 3.06GHZ PC with 1GB DUAL DDR RAM on latest GIGABYTE chipset and dual TTGI 4-FAN PS (480w each) on full tower. I run S-IDE array with (4) 120GB drives. I have been working with computers since 1980 and pretty much haven't stopped. Now, I work exclusively with high-end Cisco Systems equipment but I do alot of work in FreeBSD, Linux, Solairs, php, perl, Win98-XP/NT, and bunch of other platforms. I did PC tech work growing up for about 10 years. You are completely right the average user will not notice the difference with video cards or onboard graphics, but the gamers certainly will. Even going from a Geforce3 to 9700 is a big jump, especially if you had the MX or 256 line chipset. I use to play more games, (before tractorforum.com came around)
;) ---- but it is still fun to have a nice capable system when you need/want it. :D

I guess that's the reason....

I don't do Computer Games.

I Browse, Word Process, do Spreadsheets, and telnet to the AS/400 at school for COBOL & RPG, but don't play computer games. I have never played Minesweeper, Freecell, or Solitaire. EVER...

I play regular games like Cribbage, That's All, Monopoly, Uno, Othello, etc. but think computer games are silly. I played Pac-Man once (about 10 years ago), but that cured me of ever wanting to waste my brain cells with Computer Games.

To me, a Computer is a work tool, and not a toy for entertainment.

If I want entertainment.... I write to you guys!!!!

Holy Cow

Sure wish I had a clue what you guys are talking about half the time.I am on my second computer ,only because the great blackout of 2003 caused my old one to have diarrhea of the bed.
I will say that the new one is a whole bunch more machine then my old HP from Wally-world.I bought a sony vaio Rz 34g,what ever the hell that means.19" flat screen is real nice when I play solitaire or minesweeper.

I usually prefer the XBOX, Nintendo and such, but I really like the first person shooter games being played across the internet. After a hard day, when things get quiet in the evening, I tell my wife... "I'm going to go shoot people and blow things up".

Why????

That sounds like something those moronic students at my college would consider entertainment....

I thought Grown-Up's had better things to do, like insult each other, and talk "Tractor".

I am a moronic student... okay, not even close.

I've always enjoyed playing nintendo, sega and stuff. That's part of the kid in me. I like the challenge of competing and can't always take it out on the court when most of the people that I work with aren't into it shooting hoops or other such stuff.

You'd be suprised how many middle-agers are up there playing. It's also very funny beating the younger crowd who think they are hot #[email protected]

Lastly, it's mindless entertainment. When I am doing it, I am not thinking about work, other stresses in life, etc. I'm there taunting other people, talking trash and generally have good clean fun.

I still don't get why Grown-Up's would PURPOSELY want to act like 12 year olds....

It might be even better if 12 year olds acted like Grown-Ups!!!
