Stopped by my local dealer today on the way to HD. Talked to the service people about a filter for my 170 and asked about some engines I saw in the bone yard. I hadn't seen them before and they looked "new". There were:

20hp B&S twin
17hp JD twin
2 17hp B&S singles

The 20hp was for a warranty tractor repair that turned out to be not the motor. The had ordered a new motor, installed it, and then found the real problem. Nothing wrong with this one at all! The warranty job was covered so the engine went out the yard.

The 17hp JD twin, I believe, only has a bad part on the compression release and that's all. Otherwise perfect. Again, warranty repair.

The 2 B&S's look new, but I have to get more info from the service department on them.

Bottom line is, I brought the 20hp B&S twin home in the trunk today and I pick up the 17hp JD twin tomorrow. If the 2 17hp singles are in good shape, I'll get them this weekend. I'm hyped about figuring out a project for these.

Just kidding Man that s a GREAT find. Cant say to much I scored a lid for my Ingersoll Hydrobagger from my dealer. Had a tinny crack in it, and they hung on to it for years, finly sick of tripping over it I guess. Did not NEED one, but I could just imange dropping something on mine that night.

Major Setback...

Well, I went back to the dealer to pick up the 17hp JD (Kawasaki) V Twin engine. The service dept people thought a compression release part was the only thing wrong. When I picked it up to put in the trunk it seems like more oil on the case than normal. I tipped it on it's side to put it in the trunk and...clunk, clank... I could hear pieces of metal in the crank case. Ooops... I put it back and went inside to the service department. Come to find out it was the 17hp B&S singles that just have bad compression springs. The JD is shot.

Sooo, I only get 3 engines, only 1 twin, and no Kawasaki, only B&S's. Dang! Oh well, might put the 17 twin in the Hot Rod project tractor replacing the 15hp single.

For the love... this JD store owner isn't going to stop until they give you a new Backhoe and front end loader!!!!

The best ours has done is giving my daughter one of the little Ertl tractors because she didn't want to climb off the tractor and go home at closing time.

In case you can't tell, I'm jealous!

The did purchase a Troy-Bilt tiller, Bear Cat Chipper/Shredder and a Stihl chain saw from them but that was last year.

This year has only been a JD170 for $45 (including front wheel weights), a 42" front blade for it for $40, and a detailed parts manual for $35. Oh, and I did buy some parts....plugs, filters, fuel shutoff valves, JD yellow and green paint and some oil for the Stihl. I probably drop a few bucks more, I guess.

I do make sure the parts dept. mgr gets a fresh cup of coffee whenever I go there, even if I have to make a new pot. I listen attentively as they bitch about the owner, JD, Stihl, UPS or any other PITA in their day. I show my sympathy with grunts, head nods and other body language.

If the discussion turns to politics, I excuse myself for the restroom. If it is still going on when I get back, I remember something my wife told me to get at the supermarket a few blocks away. (I know better than drop a few tidbits of my dry humor after being around this place for a while :furious: :furious: )

Even though my regular salesman left to start his own landscape material distribution company, I still stop to buy to say "Hi"....and... got anything interesting in the "Bone Yard"??

They are kinda in the sticks but only 10 - 15 minutes away from me. Maybe I could list my location as Haight/Ashbury, SF. That should discourage most...:furious: :furious: :furious:

Hard to beat a good tall glass of sweet tea, except maybe a tall cold glass of iced coffee!

As to giving away locations for scrounge.........thats a no no! I have an aquaintance that always hounds me to no end to reveal to him where I do most of my scrounging at, and gets highly upset when I refuse to tell him..........but on the same hand, he is always going to auctions that sell machine tools etc, and he never reveals when these auctions are until after they are over.......when he comes around to show me or tell me about all the "great" prices and how little he paid for things..........so I guess its a two way street, but its best to keep sources of free or cheap stuff under your hat!
