I recently had a water leak and had to do major disassembly to replace the hose. Upon reassembly, the engine worked fine, but there was still a leak. Disassembled again to successfully replace the water pump. Upon reassembly, no more leak, but the engine behaves as if the governor is not working. Has to be started at the lowest possible speed, and if increased, it races uncontrollably and has to be turned off. Obviously something in the reassembly (done by a friend, who also did the first reassembly) is wrong. Is it possible that it is as simple as reversing the rear and front governor control rods?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I wonder if the Friend straightened the governor rod making it a little too long and causing an issue? Do you have a service manual? There should be a section in there that explains the set up.
Thanks for your response. We'll take another look. I do have the Shop Manual, but it doesn't really clarify the situation for me.
