I have a series 3 D17. My neighbor borrowed it and left the gas on which does not hold too well. The gas ran out of it. Is it possible for the gas to run through the engine and into the crank case? There was some on the floor, but it didn't look like a whole tanks worth.

Very possible on most gasoline engines, especially those with a carburetor and gravity flow fuel system. Pull the dip stick and check the crankcase oil level and that should tell the story.

That's why I install a shut off valve in the fuel line and closing that valve is part of the shut down procedure.
