D-14 AC Runs Great--Hard to Start

Hello,

I have a D-14 Allis Chalmers that's been a great tractor for the past 20 years. It was the one tractor I could count on to start every time. But over the past few years it has developed an annoying problem. As soon as I turn the key, it will start after about one rotation, but then die immediately. Crank it again, and it will do the same thing. If you're patient enough, after about 15-20 iterations it will finally start and then run perfectly all day. It idles great, and it handles a load correctly. But you'd better not turn it off before you get back to the barn (LOL). It seems to behave the same way whether the engine is warm or cold.

What would cause a tractor to act this way? So far, I've cleaned out the carb and put a new basic kit in it. I've replaced the spark plugs (they REALLY needed it). I cleaned the screen on the breather. I've washed out the tank and put an inline filter in the fuel line. I put a new battery on it this weekend. But nothing so far has helped.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Jamie

Really?

Where's a good place to get an ignition switch for a D-14?

Thanks.

You were right, Dandeline68! I put a new ignition switch on the D-14, and she starts like a dream now.

I didn't care for the selection of switches at my local TSC, so I stopped by the NAPA dealer. They had one that looked almost exactly like the original. I had to Dremel the dash panel hole about 1/16th of an inch, but then it fit perfectly.

Thanks so much. It's nice to be able to count on the ole Allis again

Did you check the ignition points for pits or maybe the gap closed up from wear & tear
