Coyote Hunting ~~~ Me

Had a stand off with what I think was a coyote the other nite.
( Was to dark and to far away to see for sure. but I wasn't gonna try and get up any closer for a better look. )
The thing just stood in it's tracks and wouldn't let me out the door of my storage building so I could get back into the house.
The stand off musta lasted about 5 minutes before it trurned in it's tracks and went the other way.

Is that why you are asking about .22 rifles? For a critter that bold you would be much better off with a 12 guage shotgun and 00 buckshot. For longer shots a .223 with soft points so you won't have riccochettes or shoot through the animal.

I share Chiefs sentiments. I've got an old mod 11 Remington 12 ga with open choke just for such ocasions. A 22 MIGHT scare it off and it would take a good shot at night? with a 223. Doubt it was a coyote, more like a dog and they don't necessarily scare.

'Yotes don't normally stand anything larger than them down.

They haul butt at the first hint of a threat unless in a group, and even then, they are not too bold.

A handgun on the hip, like the pocket knife on the belt, might be a viable option and less cumbersome than a rifle or shotgun.

'Yotes are funny critters though, and I ain't sayin', but I have had one or two, run, turn around, and double check.
Each time it cost them.
Mostly cuz there was a rifle handy or handgun on the hip.

The threat 'Yotes represent, is that they get more bold over time, if we do nothing.

Keep 'em honest, and they move on to where folks think they are "cute" untill fluffy the Cat starts getting filched, and neighborhood associations start screeching to the authorities.

Check the local game laws. Use a good Call, plan for activity upwind AND downwind.

Stay safe!!

I'd like to get a better look at it before I start taking pot shots at it.
I want to know what I'm shooting at.

lb59,

Attacks on Humans by 'Yotes are extremely rare, and in each incidence I have looked into, severe circumstances existed.

Long Harsh winter, starving pack, starving victims isolated and looking like a pack of Limping sheep etc...

Head out of the house in the wee hours every once in a while for the next week and listen.

If you have 'Yotes moving in, they will be heard. They can't help themselves about yapping and celebrating.

Also, get out and about and wander around looking for sign.

If you have a good Rabbit Population, the 'Yotes will be thumping the Rabbits, and then fighting over who gets the biggest chunk.

Take the Dog with you. Watch the pooch as it marks. If it gets serious about things, ya might have an issue.
If you find where the 'Yotes have been marking thanks to the Pooch, Heck, Join in! It get's them thinking.

Don't let the things rattle you.

They are shy, and retreat at first threat unless they are desperate or cornered.

Heck, Every once in a while, Sam(My Mutt) and I hear them yapping, and go outside and Yap/Howl a bit ourselves

Just so they know another Pack is there.

Get inside thier OODA Loop and they ain't a problem.

Hunt them to reduce thier numbers, or offer hunting to Varmint hunters locally, just so ya WONT have a problem.

Stay safe!!

My wife was talking to her stepmother last nite and she was telling my wife that her neighbor across the road from her shot 2 coyotes the nite before that were attacking his dog.

It's about 7.5 miles between her place and ours.

Nope:
Wonder if the lights could be causing them to shy away?

The lights will definitely shut them up. I hear them yip yapping all around the house at night and as soon as I turn the lights on.........silence. I did nail one week before last in broad daylight out the back door about 200 yards with the .223 Ranch Rifle. Shot at him once and missed, then he came back again about 20 minutes later. He jumped in the air and did a flip flop but was able to run off. Haven't seen it since.

I've invested in the new .17 HMR rifle. It has worked wonders on the ever-growing beaver population.
