Clearing Brush-Just learning

Still learning about my tractor and what it can do, as all I have really had a chance to do is cut grass and use auger for post holes on my fence. 45HP with 5ft bush hog. Alot of thick brush but all is very dry right now due to the drought. I know this is definitly a green horn question but can anyone give advise on best way to go about this? Someone told me to lift up the brush hog as high as it would go and back up over the trees and brush that werent to big and get the rpms up and slowly let down, and jsut keep doing this over, then back up a little more. Is this the way to go about it, I dont see how else to do it. Seems like this will take forever. Thought of hiring one of these guys with a mulcher and are asking around $1300 per acre. Another $125 an hour, which didnt seem to bad but they never got back to me after our first phone call. I was told if I went this route to make sure I didn hire one with a skid steer. I dont want to clear all of my land and want to save alot of the trees. Just want to clear out the brush for now so I can actually get around, then go from there and would love to do myself if possible with the equipment I have. Thanks again for any info.

Thanks Thomas. I have a full range of size, from as big around as a finger to full grown trees 5 ft around. I'm cuttting out the bigger stuff that I dont want with my chainsaw to make room for the tractor. I am going to keep all the big trees some over 80ft Oaks and pines among others I dont know what they are for sure. Alot of sycamore, and pin oak. If you go to my profile and albums I have several pics. Not sure how to attach them here.
