I have a Ford 4000 and would like to know the year. Have looked on several sites that have shown where the serial number should be, but it is not there. Any hints to use the numbers that are stamped on tha transmission or engine? Thanks!!

Click on the above location, look at the location of the date codes of the rest of the tractor locations and see what they say...typically they will be withing a couple of months of the tranny.

The numbers on the flat spot of the bell housing behind the starter are probably painted over. If need be, scrape the paint off.

The manufacturing date code is 8f18ba which translates as follows:
8 - 1968
f 18 - June 18th
June 18th 1968
ba - midnight/day shift.

Ford 4000 serial numbers for 1968 started at 161300 and ended at 190200. So your serial number 171573 falls into place in 1968.

So you have the manufacturing date code, the serial number, and M4000 for model number.
