9N Altinator Charging?

How do I find out if my altinator is charging my battery? Using a volt meter, where do I check for voltage? I have a 9N which only has one wire connected to it running over to a relay.

Jason,

The easiest way is to check the voltage across the battery. Since you say you have an alternator, I assume a 12 volt system. With your tractor not running and a fairly accurate volt meter you should read about 12 to 13 volts. Check again after cranking your tractor and rev it up about half way. You should then read about 13.5 to 14.5 volts. The main thing is an increase in the voltage reading between running and not running. This increase would indicate that your alternator is charging.

If you still have doubts about your alternator after this test, check with your local parts store. Most of them will check it for free, if you will take it off your tractor and carry it to them.

Alternator Charging

John-in-GA.
Thanks for the reply to my question. I'll try to check the voltage this weekend.

Hi Jason ,
another easy way to tell if your alternator is putting out charge is , while the engine is running , remove the positive cable from the battery. if the alt. is working the engine will continual running , if the alt. is dead the engine will stop running.

How ever , this won`t tell you how much it`s putting out , if any !!
Good luck
