Resurrecting a CAT C-12
I am looking at buying a piece of equipment with a CAT C-12 425HP engine. The CAT shop tells me it has been about 5 years since it's last oil change and the dipstick is rusted to the tube. We have not yet pulled the valve covers......
Is there somebody out there with experience on starting CATs that have been lying around ?
I am really concerned with whether rust under the valve covers is a big deal or not. If it just means I need to change the oil every 1000 miles for the next 5,000 then that is not a big deal. If rust getting into the main oil distribution is going to lead to an engine failure, that is a bigger deal. Does anybody know?
