PTO driveline shield

I have a question about the PTO driveline shield. Is it supposed to turn with the driveline (as long as it stops independently of the driveline if need be) or should I fix it in place and have the driveline spin within the shield?

There should be a chain at each end of the shield. The chains are to be hooked around something to prevent the shield from rotating.

PTO shield chains are usually supplied with an attachment to keep the shield from rotating.
I have never chained the shields. I just let it rotate with the shaft.

There is a chain, but I wasn't sure if there was any point to hooking it up, so long as I keep the bearing lubed up. If anything ever contacted the shield, it would stop, and not being hooked up would save on wear and tear.

Not every PTO shield has a chain to prevent movement of the shield. If there is a chain, I hook it up, but more often than not, there is no chain. Its possible you see it more with implements that are intended for home owners or non-farmers though. Actually, the only farm equipment I remember seeing one on was the silage bagger and my cousin's trailer type feed mixer. Moral of the story: Chain it if you have it, don't worry about it if you don't as long as the shield stops when something contacts it. You can test that with a stick or some other device to apply slight pressure to the shield, but don't ever use your hands.
