hope its the starter

I have a mf65 row crop. It stared fine this morning. I tried to start it a second and the engine turned over a few times then stopped with nothing but the whine of the starter motor heard. It wasn't engaging the fly wheel. I removed the starter a noticed that they piece with the teeth that fits into the flywheel would free float back and forth as I tilted the starter. Is it supposed to do this? I've never noticed this before when having starters rebuilt. Is it possible that the flywheel froze up even though it was just running?

Did you check the battery voltage? Had a Jeep that started fine in the morning, but when I stopped at the gas station for breakfast, it wouldn't restart. Battery had failed on the way to town. If its a 12v system, you should be getting 12.5-12.6 volts on a fully charged battery.

Flywheel is bolted to the crank shaft, so, no if you shut the tractor off the flywheel isn't seized. More likely the Bendix on the starter from what you describe.
