Fertilizer Spreader Repair

I have a Agrex model 300 spreader. Had it now for at least 5 years. The spreader disc has rusted all to pieces and I have ordered a new one. I've started taking it apart and have quickly realized this will not be easy. I've removed the bolt that attaches the agitator; but the agitator seems to be froze/stuck on the shaft. Any thoughts on how to remove the agitator?

Howdy moremarkt,

Welcome to the tractor forum.

One of the most corrosive products that I know of is fertilizer. I guess that's because of the salts in fertilizer.

Have you tried a 2 jaw puller on it? Spray liberally with penetrating oil.

Try to get it to turn on the shaft (trying to shear the corrosion bond).

If all else fails, heat the agitator base with a torch till its glowing red to break the bond.

You can also cut it off of the shaft if necessary.

Try to borrow a slide hammer from you local auto parts store. Many have good quality pulling tools that they will loan out (you have to pay a fee, but get your money back when tools are returned).

Thanks for all the feedback sixbales and harry16! I finally got it all apart today. It was an ugly process. Ended up having to drive the old spinner onto a bushing which in turn started driving the agitator. After lots of beating and banging and improvising it came off.
Thanks again!
