New guy - couple questions
Hi team - I just purchased a 2654 for mowing my 2 acres. Its great - So much faster than my old 1949 farmall cub I used before. Heck of a lot louder though.
I have 3 hrs on it so far & love it. Now the kids can mow too.
Anyway - thats not why I'm here. My father gave me his Husqy 2248 (I think - 22hp 48in deck). Its maybe 5 years old - but only has 150 hrs. The catch is - he mowed the grass one day after changing the oil to synthetic - & it mysteriously just pumped the oil out on the ground and blew the engine - broken rod i think.
So - now I have a low hour decent mower that needs a $1000 engine. I'm trying to determine if its possible to cheaply ($400 ish) replace the 22hp engine or if I should just part this tractor out.
He gave it to me for parts - but I have a 3 year warrenty and dont plan to buy any for a while.
Maybe I'll make it into one of those redneck racers!
Thanks in advance -

Thanks - So will just any verticle shaft engine bolt in? I looked closer & its a 21hp if that makes a difference.
I'd like to find a rebuild kit with gaskets etc & try to replace the bottom end this winter if I have time. To be honest though - I'll probably just find another engine to drop in. that will take a lot less time - and at the moment - time is hard to come by.

I dropped the engine off at a repair shop today - it was very easy to remove. They will give me a call & let me know how jacked up it is.

If its to high you might see if they have a good used engine they would sell you.. Ususally around here a good used engine would be $150-$250 if its in good running condition.. Let us know what they find out.. I wish i would have known a month ago I sold a 18hp twin Briggs for $100..

If youre going to spend that kind of money for a replacement motor, do Wjjones suggestion and get a good running $300 tractor off craigslist - id go for an old skool opposed flathead twin briggs 18HP or bigger , mainly because those motors are less complicated then V twins, easy to work on and have more power then newer motors ( no plastic parts inside em). Ive bot a couple tractors with twins for under $75 before.
Unless you have a high end, expensive tractor i wouldnt waste money on running synthetic, personally i dont see any advantage ( you found the disadvantage - sometimes the synthetic shrinks the seals) - a good quality oil will work perfectly fine , just change it a couple times or more a season.
Most my tractors have motors up to 41 years old, all original , never opened, splash type lubrication and they still run great on regular 30 weight, 10w30/40, 5w20/30, even ran 15w40 in em without an issue.
Be prepared for a sticker shock when they tell you how much itll cost to fix the motor - wont be cheep.

Update!!
The local shop wanted $1500 to repair the broken rod! Ha Ha! That was buying a new short block & them rebuilding with my parts.
I can buy a brand new replacement engine on ebay for $500 with free shipping.
Here's the thing - with a good running original engine I'm estimating this mower is worth between $900 & $1100 - tell me if I'm wrong - 5 yrs old 131hrs - Husq. 2148. With a odd ball replacement engine its worth half that - with a replacement engine maybe $600 to $800...maybe. So is the tractor worth $300 w/o an engine? If I part it out 1 piece at a time.
I hate the idea of trashing such a solid tractor because of the bum engine - by trashing I mean parting out -
To be honest - my new mower (husq 2654) has a 3 year warrenty - I wont need parts for a long time. I dont really have the time to monkey with this - which is why I took it in. I like the idea of a cheap engine somewhere - but I dont want to go below 20hp or not much below 20.
Anyone have an engine they will sell?

Thanks - I found one in southern IL for $75 - but 3+ hrs drive each way seems a bit too much. At least for me.
I will not be selling or parting it out until spring - when most people are looking - unless someone here wants to make me an offer I cant refuse.
So I've got time to look around - honestly though - $499 for a replacement with 2 yr warrenty doesnt seem unreasonable - the tractor would be worth twice that with a new engine. So - I'll keep that in mind & maybe someone will need some cash this winter when sales are slow.
