There is no law in my state about having a well tested. However, if you refinance or sell a house with a well the lender usually requires a water test. I had mine tested maybe 15 years ago.

As far as who does it, there is a sewerage treatment plant about 10 miles from me and they did the testing there. Look in your phone book or call your town hall or local building inspector, they should be able to give you the information you need.

I've noticed well water will change at times of high water table or floods and low water table (drought) These would be good times to test. There are some great filters out there. I use a filter called First Need ( no chemicals ) when I back pack that even filters viruses, they have a line of home filters as well. If I was on a well I would have one, that way you would be protected from changes that naturally ocur in wells.

A good filter system is good advice.

Our well gets tested every year by the co-op that buys our milk. Mainly tested for nitrates and a few other things, so its not a complete test. We must have a pretty good aquifer because our well is only down about 38' and the casing was installed in the 1860s or 70s. They just added onto it when they buried the old pump pit and converted it to a submersible.

My father was on well growing up and he had it tested once a year to make sure of the purity of the drinking water.
