Neighbor's Man Cave.

My across the alley neighbor has a 3 bay that is ROTTING into the ground! It is full of 'wonderful' stuff, rusting into the ground.
Last weekend, I dragged him across the alley and showed him my 'man-cave'.
He was blown away! Tonite, I called on the boys to help me drag his VW bus outside, cover it up, put in a 'deadman' header to keep the roof of his 3 bay from falling on our heads, then I called all his friends to get them here this Sunday, to rebuild the roof!
Fred is a wonderful man! He has 'given away' enough materials to rebuild his garage many times over.
He's like a 'local' Home Depot for FREE!
The VW was driven into that garage 18 years ago.
There was a generator, 8,000 watts that he has never used, He has 'struggled' with the factory jacks on his trucks, while a 3 ton Hydraulic jack rotted in his garage! (It is 'supporting' his roof tonite)!
I'm 'fixing' all the stuff I find!
I took a bunch of pics, but left the camera in MY Man cave.

Fred is about to be 'awakened'!
Last week, he dared to say that he was 'boored' after 6:00 pm, since he couldn't play with his 'toys' at his new house.
His GF better get used to being alone at night! HE is going to be in my 'hood' playing with his toys!, She might just have to find something to paint or rake if she wants to see him!
If he doesn't come play with his toys, I will have a couple more bays to play with mine!( since I have the keys)

Can you get pics of it? I love old garages, reminds me of growing up and spending time with my grandfather.

Yeah, we had an old local Hardware store that was as dark as night inside, but the old guy who owned it knew where everything was in it, old sheds always seem to smell the same as that old hardware store to me.
it would be a great journey of discovery to go through some of those old sheds (providing they didn't fall on your head!!!!)

Cheers

Yep a place for everything, and everything in its place.. I have a habbit like that so I know without thinking where what I need is at.. I know what you mean about the feel of the place we had an old hardware store/ lumber store when I was growing up. It had that same feel to it that you just wanted to stay there because it was so inviting.. Some pictures would be great when you get a chance Cublover..

Here is a few. We worked till 8:30 Sunday night!
We are starting with the worse bay and moving 'south'. We replaced all three headers and beefed up the supports. It's getting metal this week on that bay, then we move the 'stuff' out of the other 2 bays and do them.
The new back walls will be cinder block with those glass block windows. The center bay gets a door on the back so he can drive through to the storage area behind.

The licence plates that cut down the heat loss were 1920 thru 1925 so far.
His GF came in and said that we should just tear it down. THEN she saw the plates! An Old German beer thermometer, a box of dishes on the top shelf that matched her Grandmother's set she prized, (including 2 serving bowls and a cream pitcher that she lacked) GAME ON!! By then, we had the first header ready to go up, and her 'attitude' changed! Now the roof is back where it belongs and the 'stuff' is moved to a safe place. I even found an 'impliment' for my 40's vintage one wheel cultivator! The bed of my truck is full of old car 'treasures' rescued!
YES! The VW bus is scheduled to spend some time at the farm this winter.
This is the neighbor that we painted the white F 150 for this summer.

After a few hours work and some beers, the neighbor decided that he has 'wasted' 15 years because he 'didn't have the money' to do it right.
I explained it to him this way.
I reminded him that he is over a year older than his father was when he died.
Then I reminded him that I'm 5 years older than he is. I mentioned that the 'patchwork' we are doing to his garage and my house will last at least 25 years, maybe MORE. I asked him what the 'odds' are that he will give a crap that the wall he 'cut a corner on' now has a crack in it when he's 81?

My redneck repairs are based on ONE thing. 'Will it outlast ME'? If so, DO it!
I don't need a house that is already 160 years old to last another 100 years for ME or my wife., We won't 'live' here. My kids won't move here, they have much newer houses.
When I see a 25 year warrentee, I think LIFETIME!
The moral of this story, Lower your expectations, if they keep you from enjoying what you have now!
Fred 'WASTED' 15 years on this garage, because he 'didn't have the money to do it right'. Now, he's gonna follow the Redneck way of thinking and 'do it before it's too LATE'!!

You young guys reading this take note!

I've always been happy with what I could afford, I'm fortunate in that regard.

There's no waste in that garage unless it's time looking for interesting stuff.

I was kinda stressed when I got home from work, so I did some DEMO on the back wall. EXCELLENT stress releiver! Wall is now GONE!! PICS!!

Not a lot of interior detail, but it is easier to see inside. They are calling for 4 to 8 inches of snow to hit here any MINUTE!! It is raining and I can see my breath outside.
IF it snows tonite, do you know what that MEANS for this project?
It means that I'm gonna have to wear my Carharts!!!
I just went outside. No 'ice' yet. Really close though and a fine mist of rain falling.
If we get the snow, I'll drag the 2x6's inside and build the headers for part 2. Something is going to happen, no matter what!

Well, the debris from the demo got burned today, some privacy fence went in, stuff that water won't hurt got moved outside to give more swinging room.
All the weeds and vines got chopped down and burned. The area where the block wall is going got cleared. Then it got dark...
More fun later.

Hard work is a GOOD thing! Keeps your body going. My back hurts rather I sit and do nothing or work. If I work, it almost stops hurting till I quit. (so I try to 'not' quit)
When I lay around, it gets worse each day. I have found that if you are tired enough from working, you can sleep better.

I am. I have some more rural family and I love getting to explore their garages and barns.

I can't wait till mine is so packed with stuff people want to do the same. The men in my family love to collect and that's where the majority of it ends up.
