case 224 and 446

anyone had this problem with the hydrostat transmission? My experience with a hydrostat is when you step on the pedal to go forward you go forward, reverse is reverse, and when you let off you stop. Now on these when I let off say when going down hill in forward it freewheels like crazy. Same happens in reverse down a hill. I have taken the hydro motor off the rear-end and disassembled the rear end and found no problems. Is this normal for these and if so, or if not, what causes this and what causes the other hydrostats to stop in neutral, for example they do not free wheel, they are very stable and controllable. if any one could shed some light on this it would be great. thanks in advance.

Hopefully someone else will jump in and give you a more informed answer, but I can tell you what I know.

To begin with, both of those tractors have hydraulic transmissions, not hydrostatic. Hydraulic uses gears to move the oil and hydrostatic uses pistons. I read is a very good article that explains how both work better than I can. I will post a link if I can find it.

As far as the freewheeling, I'm not sure if that is normal, but from what I have read in this and two other forums it is fairly common.

these tractors need a holding valve installed in series with the directional control valve. many years ago worked for case and installed a few. biggest complaint was the tractor would run away when tilling or working on slopes. don't know if this valve and hardware kit is still available, but check with lawn and garden equipment wreckers.....dieselman.
