Hydrostatic Trans Slips Into Gear

I've got a '88 520H and the transmission is difficult to keep in neutral. If I apply the foot brake it stays in neutral but if I just try to hold the lever in the middle position it's very difficult to get it out of gear. It always seems to be slipping into forward or reverse. It hasn't always been like this. Any ideas on what to check?

Welcome to the forum Bradley and Merry Christmas! I'm guessing here, but I'd say that the lever needs to have the tension tightened so the lever isn't so apt to stray from neutral, or it could be that the mechinism is getting out of adjustment. But who knows?

Id say crawl underneath it and get a birds eye view of the setup- could be a weak spring, something couldve come loose, on hydros, im not sure about changing the trans fluid ( due to air pockets) . It is 22 years old - probably some wear has taken effect.

BradleyJ,

Try lifting the seat and slightly tightening the pivot nut on the hydro linkage. A quarter turn should do it. Sounds to me like your transmission is simply vibrating into gear. Just tighten it until the lever on the column is a little harder to move up and down without tightening it so much that it won't move.
