Horse engine oil

I have an old horse with HH60 engine. The service manual says not to use 10w40. Why would 10W40 be bad for it?

Too many additives, viscosity stabilizers. There was a time when GM had a no 10-40 policy in their cars. Don't recall what kind of damage could happen.

Was it because of detergent, and non-detergent oil??

Over the years ive run everything from SAE 30 weight, 10w 30/40 , 5w20/30 ( is what i usually run in em cause my truck runs it) in my old tractors - even my '92 White LT12 when it was brand new to 19 years later - never had any of them come apart - my motors are all old briggs splash type oilers. The motors I have range from 40 years old to 8 years old. I also add Lucas oil additive in every time i change the oil for extra protection.

If the manual says not to use it- then i wouldnt.

Nope, this was in relatively recent times, maybe within the last 10-20 yrs. Seem to recall it was due to excessive amounts of VIS stabilizer and sticking rings.

You can find comments if you do a search.

TroyBilt recomends straight sae30 oil, because these units are generally used in temps above 60f,and multi-vis oils don't shed heat from the parts as fast. This can cause overheating, gumming, excessive oilconsumption, and in some cases, engine lockup.I'd stay with the sae 30.
